Louise VIAL-MARKIEWICZ Scientific Animation co-Ambassador

Interview

English version

  • Your name: Louise Vial-Markiewicz

  • Your position in Doctoneuro: VP Scientific Animation

  • Your education:
After graduating high school in Nîmes, I moved to Strasbourg to start University there. The undergrad was in life sciences, which meant that we didn’t study just biology but biology, physics, chemistry and maths. We had an introductory class in Neuroscience during the undergrad, and I loved it. I decided to apply for the master’s in Neuroscience in Strasbourg, specialized in cellular and Integrative neuroscience. At the end, I applied for the PhD and got the funding, so here I am. I truly don’t get any points for originality; this is the most basic way of getting here.

  • What you're currently doing:
I’ve now started the 2nd year of my PhD at the INCI, in Rémy Schlichter’s team. I work on the network in the dorsal horn of the spinal corn and its plasticity. I mostly use patch clamp to study synaptic plasticity, which is so much fun when it works, and the worst thing in the world when it doesn’t. Basically, I listen to neurons talk all day.

  • What brought you to do that:
For science: curiosity and love of learning. For neuroscience: understanding how the nervous system works is one of the final frontiers (and I never get bored of thinking that I’m studying something with the object of that study). My project: patch-clamp is a challenge. I do think I chose the technique more than the actual project, even if I do love working on synaptic plasticity. But it’s the fun, game aspect of patch that really attracted me to this.

  • What you'd like to do after that:
I have no idea. If I were true to how I’ve proceeded with the rest of my education, I would try to keep on going forward, with a post-doc. But I’m not sure that’s exactly what I want. I still have a couple years to try and figure it out.

  • What brought you to invest yourself in Doctoneuro:
I helped organize the M1s’ day back to school when I was an M2, and it was a lot of fun. So I decided to take on more responsibility and continue to organize fun projects for everyone. It was my first time in an association, and I mostly see it as a group of friends having fun together.

  • What are your projects/objectives for Doctoneuro:
For the moment, it’s finding a way of adapting scientific animation to the current situation, trying to keep a scientific discussion going with the community of students. Most of us love talking about what we do, and sharing it with others, so let’s try and make that happen again!

  • Your favorite lockdown activity:
It depended on the week. Some weeks I would really get into working, others it was hard to do anything else but reading/watching movies. I think the consistent activity throughout the lockdown was eating and laying on the couch. Yeah, that sounds about right.

  • During lockdown, you wore everyday outfits or pajamas/chill outfits?
I think it was a healthy balance of both ahaha. I would get dressed for the pleasure of trying on different clothes, but since there was not much pressure to get dressed, I didn’t feel guilty about staying in my pyjamas for a few days.
  • The first thing you will you do when this sanitary situation will be over?
Going out for a drink and food with friends. I’m a pretty introverted person, so lockdown wasn’t as hard as for others, but I miss hanging out with friends in person.

  • BONUS: Your personal tip against COVID19 is…
Stay home and … Netflix and chill ;)

  • Ton nom : Louise Vial-Markiewicz

  • Ton poste à Doctoneuro : VP Animation scientifique

  • Ton parcours scolaire :

Netflix and chill ;)
